Correspondence, legal papers, deeds, conveyances, minutes, etc., 1779-1861, of Philip Church of Allegany County, New York, and other members of the Church family. Papers of Philip Church pertain mostly to his involvement in the running of the Erie Railroad through his lands in Allegany County. Papers also contain a few items of family correspondence, including 5 letters, 1821-1847, from Philip's wife, Anna Matilda Church, to her close friend, Mrs. Gerrit (Anne Fitzhugh) Smith of Peterboro, New York. Additional correspondence includes 19 letters sent from London and New York by Philip Church's mother, Angelica Schuyler Church, to various family members, including Philip himself, her sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Alexander Hamilton), and her brother, Philip Schuyler of Rhinebeck, New York. Also included are field books of Moses Van Campen's surveys of Philip Church's property known as the Church Tract in Angelica, New York, notarized 1814.
